Ballybunion Golf Course

Ballybunion Golf Club is regarded as one of the top golf courses in the world. It is rated as Ireland’s top golf course.

2004: Antrachnose and Fusarium Disease

In 2004 the greens at Ballybunion Golf Club contracted Antrachose and Fusarium disease rendering them virtually un-playable. The Club took immediate measures to cure their greens but traditional methods were slow and ineffective.

The management decided to try a new and innovative approach. They used Ted Browne’s Compost as an organic nematode suppressant and soil conditioner. Within three weeks the greens showed signs of recovery and were back to standard expected from a course like Ballybunion.

Since then Ballybunion has been using Ted Browne’s Compost as top on their dressing greens and fairways

2008: Bad Weather Destroys Two Greens

In early 2008, following high tides and bad weather, two greens in Ballybunion were destroyed by damage from salt water and sand. The management at the course chose to re-sod one green using sod from an existing green and using Ted Browne’s compost to knit the sod to the underlying sand surface. This green was playable after two to three weeks. They reconstruct the second green using Ted Browne’s Compost mixed with sand and fescue seed. Within six months the green was ready for use.

As a result of using Ted Browne’s compost Ballybunion have seen far less cases of disease on their course, they now use 50% less fertiliser and pesticides, thus also becoming more environmentally friendly reducing costs.

They have also started their own nursery where sod, to be used on tees, greens and fairways, are prepared using Ted Browne’s compost mixed with sand (1:6).
